Background Information:
The Polycomb (PcG) group proteins play a role in regulating normal proliferation and development, and deregulation of PcG proteins contributes to the development of cancer. PcGs maintain repression of target genes and are involved in gene silencing functions, including X chromosome inactivation. The PcGs form two major protein complexes, polycomb repressive complexes 1 and 2 (PRC1 and PRC2), that function to maintain transcriptional repression. CBX 8 is an essential component of PRC1 that promotes growth and in involved in repression of tumor suppressor genes.
