Background Information:
Casein kinase 1 is a serine/threonine kinase conserved in yeasts and mammals, the closest human homologue being CK1γ3. In S. pombe, casein kinase 1 is thought to regulate lipid signalling through phosphorylation of PtdIns(4)P 5-kinase, decreasing the activity of this enzyme and thereby reducing the synthesis of PtdIns(4,5)P2. There is also evidence that this kinase has dual specificity and can phosphorylate tyrosine residues in addition to serine/threonine residues.
