Background Information:
Microtubules are constituent parts of the mitotic apparatus, cilia, flagella, and elements of the cytoskeleton. They consist principally of 2 soluble proteins, alpha- and beta-tubulin, each about 55 kDa in size. Beta-tubulin binds to alpha tubulin to form tubulin heterodimer which is post-translationally modified . Beta tubulin influences the stability of the heterdimer, determined by whether the molecule of GTP bound to the beta tubulin subunit hydrolyzes to GDP along the microtubule protofilament. Beta tubulin has also been a target for various antitubulin agents used in the treatment of cancer. Studies have concluded that beta tubulin mutatons can contribute to drug resistance and may play a role in resistance to chemotherapy.
