Interacts with the beta-1 integrin VLA4 on leukocytes, and mediates both adhesion and signal transduction. The VCAM1/VLA4 interaction may play a pathophysiologic role both in immune responses and in leukocyte emigration to sites of inflammation.

This gene is a member of the Ig superfamily and encodes a cell surface sialoglycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium. This type I membrane protein mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signal transduction, and may play a role in the development of artherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Two alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.

Specificity:
Recognizes Murine vascular adhesion molecule (VCAM-1), single chain glycoprotein of Mr 100- kDa (under reducing conditions). VCAM-1 is present on the +/+ 2.4 stromal cell clone, large cells in bone marrow, and a subset of thymic macrophages. The stromal cell antigen is also detectable on the EOMA and BMS2 endothelial cell lines. The antibody reacts with all known isoforms of murine VCAM-1.
