Helicon S10 and S40 Spiral Wound Ultrafiltration Modules
Description
Featuring spiral configuration with 0.8 mm channel height,
Millipore's spiral cartridges offer exceptionally low nonspecific adsorption
characteristics. This ensures up to 99% recovery of biopharmaceuticals and
polysaccharide-containing feed materials that tend to foul conventional
filters. The cartridges can be operated at up to 4.1–8.6 bar (60–125 psig) for
industrial size and can be used in series to suit small or batch process
volumes. They are easy to use and change and can be reused repeatedly,
requiring only simple washing to restore original water flux.
These
cartridges have satisfied the requirements of the USP Class VI biological
reactivity tests. Series connection of Helicon S40 cartridges can double or
triple membrane area for a given flow rate to increase capacity.
A
“sandwich” of membrane layers is wrapped spirally around a permeate collection
tube. Layers are separated by a mesh flow spacer that maintains retentate flow
channels at 0.8 mm. This spacer also enhances turbulence in the process stream
to reduce fouling and gel formation. The edges of the membranes are bonded so
that process solution cannot enter the channel where permeate is collected.
Permeate moves spirally inside the membrane sandwich to the central collection
tube, then exits through the header assembly.
Accessories
Helicon S10 Spiral Wound Cartridges consist of the basic replaceable cartridge units and permanent reusable header assemblies. Combination of cartridges in series requires a series connector kit.
Headers
For attachment to a system, each spiral wound cartridge
requires a header kit. This reusable kit serves two functions:
1) transfer
of the permeate stream from the cartridge core to the discharge fitting in the
header.
2) adaptation of the flexible tubing to the inlet/outlet
fittings.
The S10 header kit has a hose barb connector for permeate
discharge. It has no provision for attachment of gauges.
Series Connection
By selecting the series connector kit each header kit operates up to three cartridges in series.
