ACTION, INC.
Compass Youth Program

Two years ago, says Grace Lafond of Gloucester, Massachusetts, “I was headed nowhere.” She had dropped out of high school. She didn’t have a job, or want one. Then she got pregnant.

“It was a hard point in my personal life,” she says. “But then I thought about my baby. I knew he was going to need me. I wanted to get my life going again.” Grace turned to the Compass Youth Program run by Action, Inc. the only designated anti-poverty and advocacy agency in Cape Ann, Massachusetts.

Compass helps young adults from ages 14 to 21 overcome personal setbacks (such as substance abuse, and legal and domestic problems) and take charge of their lives. Program components include academic support, career counseling, job skills training and life-skills instruction. The Millipore Foundation grant enables Compass to hire a basic education instructor to help participants pursuing their GEDs.

Less than a year after she entered the Compass program, Grace is a teller at a local bank and is preparing to take the high school equivalency exams to get her GED. “Before the program, I had such a bad attitude,” says Grace, who is now 20. “But through Compass, I learned to control that and to take everything in before I make a decision.”

Grace plans to go to night school to study early childhood education. “I never thought that I’d have this many hopes and goals,” she says. “But I do, and I plan to meet them all.”
