Upgrading Our Fleet In The US
At Millipore, we see emissions from our US fleet of 330 vehicles as an important, controllable piece of our carbon footprint. In 2007, we started including hybrid vehicles and, after considering cost, functionality (e.g. size), safety, and environmental impacts – selected Toyota as our new supplier. This process illustrated that financial factors, employee satisfaction and environmental performance could be mutually reinforcing.
No one hybrid vehicle fits every need. Employees who install or demonstrate equipment at customer sites, for example, need more storage room than that offered by a hybrid sedan or hybrid small SUV. For these employees we chose Toyota’s minivan (rated at 11.8l/100km or 19 mpg combined) and RAV4 (rated at 11.2l/100km or 21mpg combined).
We started offering the Toyota Prius (rated at 5.1l/100km or 46mpg combined) and the Camry Hybrid (rated at 6.9l/100km or 34mpg combined) to eligible employees. Those who voluntarily select a hybrid receive a $750 (Camry) or $1000 (Prius) bonus in recognition of their making an environmentally and financially sound choice.
How has the program gone so far?
Between October 2007 and August 2008 we replaced more than 200 vehicles with Toyotas. Fifty-three percent of eligible employees voluntarily chose Camry Hybrid or Prius Hybrid models!
Our goal is to reduce our emissions by 50%, from 2,000T to 1,000T CO2e, using more efficient and cost-effective vehicles. Our hybrid program—even after incentives to employees—is saving Millipore money and reducing our environmental impact.
Several facilities also provide preferential parking as an added incentive to select hybrid vehicles!
Upgrading Our Fleet in Europe
Due to the price of gas and taxes on larger engines, almost all of our European fleet are powered by fuel-efficient, smaller output diesel engines. Although we will consider hybrids for Europe in the future, the opportunity for fuel or cost savings is not as great as in the United States.
Other Travel Services
Throughout New England we have selected PlanetTran as our preferred provider of private car and airport transport services. Using a fleet of Toyota hybrids, PlanetTran decreases annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 30 metric tons, while reducing their fuel cost.
We have started gathering GHG data on air and car travel, also, and are working with Avis, our corporate rental car partner, to begin using hybrid vehicles as our preferred employee rent vehicles.
