Green Buildings

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, an estimated 48% of greenhouse gas emissions result from building construction and operation. Roughly 76% of power plant generated electricity in the United States is consumed by building operation. Intelligent design can improve these impacts while enhancing employee productivity and saving money.

For these reasons, Millipore is increasingly focused on green building practices. When possible, we renovate older structures and reuse materials. When necessary, we build new structures with environmental features in mind. We measure progress using utilization and “return on space,” which assess how we maximize revenue and value for our footprint.

See our Local Efforts: Bedford, MA page for more detail.

Millipore Focused Factory Initiative

Through our Focused Factory Initiative, we reduced our footprint by combining processes from smaller facilities into larger ones. Over the past three years, we have closed (or will soon close) manufacturing facilities in: Bedford and Danvers, Massachusetts, Cidra, Puerto Rico, and Toronto, Canada.

We are absorbing processes from these facilities into our “Centers of Excellence” in Cork, Ireland, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, and Molsheim, France, locations that are highly energy efficient, and have solvent recovery units and sophisticated recycling programs.

As a result of these and related efforts, we have reduced:

  • Electricity use by 5-10%.
  • Our global environmental footprint and square footage, while experiencing double-digit business growth.
  • Our total Massachusetts square footage by 20%, while maintaining our employee population at about 1,000.
