Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a member of the pneumovirinae subfamily of paramyxoviruses, first described in 2001 from pediatric respiratory specimens in the Netherlands. hMPV is an enveloped pleomorphic virus with a single negative-strand RNA genome containing two major serotypes, A and B containing within them subgroups A1/A2 and B1/B2 respectively. Several studies have identified hMPV in specimens confirming worldwide distribution. It is estimated that by age 5 years 70% of all children will have developed antibodies to hMPV.
