Efficient Storage Design

The main concern when storing purified water is the degradation of water purity over time. Only a strict adherence to suitable reservoir materials, associated with careful design and appropriate protection against airborne contaminants, can ensure consistent water quality during storage.


30, 60 and 100 L PE Reservoirs

Millipore 30, 60 and 100 L PE Reservoirs have been designed for optimum storage of pure water produced by the Elix and RiOs water purification systems, as well as Milli-Q Integral and Milli-Q Direct. These reservoirs integrate specific design points to minimize risks of recontamination:

  • Polyethylene material selected for minimal release of extractible to avoid pure water recontamination.
  • Opaque material prevents the development of algae by preventing sunlight access to water.
  • Purified water smoothly fed from bottom of the reservoir to minimize the surface of the water / air interface in order to limit absorption of carbon dioxide and other air contaminants.
  • Hermetically-sealed lid ensures that air enters the reservoir only through the vent filter.

  • Vent filter designed for efficient removal of typical contaminants which may be present in laboratory atmosphere: volatile organic solvents, carbon dioxide, particulates and bacteria
  • Blow-molding technique ensures a smooth internal surface to prevent biofilm formation.

  • Large top opening allows thorough brushing of inside should an exceptional cleaning procedure be performed.

Advanced Protection Against Airborne Contamination

Laboratory atmosphere is contaminated by carbon dioxide, particles, micro-organisms, and organic compounds such as the volatile organic solvents used in the laboratory. To protect the purified water from all these contaminants, Millipore has developed an advanced vent filter that includes:
  • Activated carbon to adsorb volatile organics (including lab solvents such as acetone, toluene, chloroform and methanol)
  • A soda-lime bed to remove CO2
  • A Durapore hydrophobic membrane for particle and bacterial retention

This advanced vent filter is recommended for the protection of high-resistivity water, such as Elix product water, during storage. A standard 0.65 µm membrane vent filter is available to protect reverse-osmosis-quality water.

Automatic Sanitization (ASM)

  • The ASM (Automatic Sanitization Module) is a device that limits efficiently the development of a biofilm inside the tanks.
  • The ASM illuminates the inside of the Millipore tanks using a 254 nm low pressure mercury vapor UV lamp, selected for its germicidal effectiveness.
  • The automatic illumination of the air, water and inner surfaces of the tanks occurs at regular intervals that can be programmed by the user in relationship with the regular operation of the laboratory.
  • It may be convenient, for instance, to program an illumination early in the morning, when the tank is full after a night of water production.
  • Different ASMs are available depending on the tank and the water purification system connected to it.

Air Gap Device

The air gap is a small plastic device that should be placed on any tubing going from the water system to a drain whenever bacteriological contamination of the water purification system is considered to be important issue.

Water purification systems or tanks often require water rejection to operate properly. A Milli-Q® water system with a built-in ultrafiltration (UF) cartridge will require a regular flush and sanitization of the UF cartridge, with the water used to flush the UF cartridge or remove the excess sanitizing agent discharged to drain through reject tubing. A RiOs™, Elix® or Direct-Q® water system will contain a built-in Reverse Osmosis cartridge whose reject will be sent to the drain for proper operation. A reservoir will have an overflow connected to the drain.

The drain, however, is a place that is heavily contaminated by bacteria. If the outlet of the reject tubing is pushed inside the drain, there is a risk that bacteria will contaminate the inside of the reject tubing and progressively move up from the drain to the inside of the water system, leading to bacteriological contamination of the purification modules inside the system.

This can be prevented in two ways:
  • By securing the outlet of the reject tubing a few centimeters above the drain — a solution that is not always secure or practical
  • By installing an air gap device in the reject tubing

The air gap allows the reject water flow to move through the tubing without touching the inside of the tubing walls. Installation of the air gap provides an easy and safe method to prevent the development of bacteria above the air gap level.

Water Sensor

The water sensor is a useful device that can be placed on the floor of the laboratory and is connected to the water system. In the unlikely event of a rupture of tubing or a connection in the water system, the water sensor will detect the presence of water on the laboratory floor and automatically shut down the feed water access to the system in order to limit the extent of water spillage. Once the water sensor has shut down the system operation, human intervention is required to restart the system, ensuring that the root cause of the issue has been detected and solved.

A10 TOC Monitor

The independent Millipore A10 TOC monitor is a small analytical instrument that can be connected to any high purity laboratory water system in order to provide a rapid and accurate measurement of the TOC level in the water produced.


The Millipore A10 TOC monitor will measure accurately Total Oxidizable Carbon between 1 and 999 ppb TOC values, and can be submitted to a TOC suitability test as described in the US and European Pharmacopoeia.
