Millipore Joins EPA’s Green Power Partnership
In January 2009, Millipore joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership. Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources.
Millipore purchases more than 11 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually. That is enough green power to meet about 10% of our worldwide purchased electricity use or 16% of our U.S. electricity use. This also offsets the energy used in five of Millipore’s U.S. manufacturing facilities. Millipore is buying certified Green-e Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from 3Degrees, a leading national supplier of green power products.
Millipore’s believes in the advancement of environmentally sustainable technologies and our green power purchases support the development of new renewable energy generation sources nationwide. “Longer term, it is our goal to find solutions that will eventually eliminate our contribution to climate change and operate carbon neutral,” says Martin Madaus, Chairman, CEO and President. “These are big changes that will require time and significant investment, but will pay-off in the long-term for the environment, our people and our shareholders.”
