Millipore’s Mobius® Flexible Filtration Approach Helps Lower Biomanufacturing Costs
Single-use solutions target seven lean manufacturing wastesBillerica, Massachusetts—Millipore Corporation, a leading provider of technologies, tools and services for the global life science industry, announces the launch of Mobius® Flexible Filtration, an innovative approach to single-use bioprocessing. Flexible Filtration enables customers to incorporate “lean” principles and continuous process improvements into their single-use manufacturing operations globally.
Many companies follow lean manufacturing principles to lower the costs of bringing products to market through waste reduction. Flexible Filtration is uniquely designed to target the seven main wastes identified by lean process initiatives: overproduction, excess inventory, unnecessary transportation, unnecessary motion, waiting, overprocessing and defects.
Flexible Filtration is quick to implement and helps speed up production processes, according to Vikas Gupta, Group Product Manager, Mobius Single-use Products and Services. “Biomanufacturers can lose money due to a variety of wastes, including high scrap levels, inefficient storage, long set-up periods, and even unmotivated operators. We wanted to take a smart approach to single-use manufacturing and collaborated with customers to create a solution that addresses these and other common wastes.”
At the heart of Mobius Flexible Filtration is a single-use filtration system that is ready to use right out of the box, featuring modular, fully optimized assemblies that are simple to set up. The modules can be used to create a disposable system that easily adapts to the needs of a particular site, using only what is needed for that scale. These systems are replicable, scalable and designed to facilitate technology transfer across multiple sites.
The popularity of single-use technologies has grown in response to industry trends, but rapid adoption often leads to inefficient implementation. Gupta notes, “With the world’s leading biotech companies working on developing multiple molecules, fast and efficient technology transfer across multiple sites is imperative for the rapid commercialization of a drug. Flexible Filtration addresses this need.”
“Waste reduction is critical for biopharmaceutical manufacturers and Millipore for both cost-efficiency and sustainability reasons, “says Paul Chapman, Vice President, Downstream Processing. “We have worked closely with our customers to design a unique offering that meets fast-changing product, site and scale requirements. By bringing together the right products and services, we believe it’s a revolutionary way to address a significant industry challenge.”
