New Purification Device Helps Scientists More Accurately Measure Industrial Contaminants
Unique point-of-use polisher efficiently removes volatile organics from ultrapure waterVolatile organic contaminants (VOCs) are regularly monitored in drinking water worldwide following norms established by the WHO as well as regulatory agencies in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and China. The analytical methods used to test drinking water and other samples for VOCs use ultrapure water as a critical reagent. “If the ultrapure water contains detectable levels of VOCs, it will affect the accuracy of the VOC analysis,” said Jean-François Pilette, Group Product Manager for Millipore’s Lab Water systems. “The VOC-Pak cartridge removes these contaminants to levels that are below detectable limits.”
Designed for use with Millipore’s Type I water purification systems (such as the Milli-Q®, Direct-Q®, Synergy® and Simplicity® systems), the VOC-Pak cartridge can easily be connected to these systems’ water dispensing outlet to provide VOC-free water for standard solutions preparation, sample dilution or glassware rinsing.
The new VOC-Pak cartridge employs activated carbon purification media to produce water in which the VOC concentration is below the analytical quantification limit for a number of common VOCs, provided that the VOC concentration in feed water does not exceed 1 ppb (1 µg/L) and the Total Oxidizable Carbon (TOC) of the ultrapure water entering the VOC-Pak cartridge is below 5 ppb. An example of the types of VOC molecules removed by the VOC-Pak cartridge includes Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl4), Benzene (C6H6), Chloroform (CHCl3), Dibromochloromethane (CHBr2Cl) and Toluene (C6H5CH3).
The VOC-Pak cartridge joins Millipore’s offering of point-of-use (POU) final filters. This range includes the EDS-Pak® point-of-use polisher for production of endocrine disrupter-free water; the BioPak® ultrafiltration cartridge for preparation of pyrogen- and nuclease-free ultrapure water for use in cell culture, biochemistry, or molecular biology applications; and the Millipak® filter with Millipore Express® 0.22 µm membrane filter for the removal of particulates and bacteria from ultrapure water in analytical applications such as spectrophotometry, spectroscopy and chromatography. All of the POU filters can be used as a final purification step with the Milli-Q Advantage, Milli-Q Integral, Direct-Q, Synergy and Simplicity systems.
