New Proteomics Platform Analyzes In-Gel Digests
Applied Biosystems, Millipore and PerkinElmer Life Sciences Develop an Automated Solution for Sample Preparation
FOSTER CITY, CA; BEDFORD, MA and BOSTON, MA --- June 5, 2002 --- Applied Biosystems, an Applera Corporation business, Millipore Corporation and PerkinElmer Life Sciences today announced the availability of an integrated proteomics platform for high throughput in-gel digestion, sample cleanup and protein identification. Traditional in-gel digest techniques are time- and labor-intensive as well as subject to variability in reagent preparation, liquid handling and analysis.
The platform consists of the Applied Biosystems Proteomics Solution™ System Mass Spectrometer System, the PerkinElmer Life Sciences’ MultiPROBE® II Robotic Liquid Handler and Millipore’s Montage™ In-Gel Digest96 Kit.
The MultiPROBE II robotic liquid handling system rapidly and efficiently manipulates the components of the Montage In-Gel Digest96 Kit for automated preparation of protein samples and subsequent spotting onto Applied Biosystems MALDI targets. The kit includes everything needed to digest 384 samples, including prepared reagents, enzymes and four low-binding 96-well filter plates. The vacuum-based protocol minimizes pipetting, reduces the number of transfer steps and decreases the chance of sample loss.
Sample tracking and information is sent directly to the Applied Biosystems Proteomics Solution 1 System for unattended MALDI-TOF analysis, database searching and report generation. Using proprietary noise removal and deisotoping algorithms, the system generates high quality data and rapid, accurate protein identification.
About Applera Corporation and Applied Biosystems
Applera Corporation comprises two operating groups. The Applied Biosystems Group develops and markets instrument-based systems, reagents, software, and contract services to the life science industry and research community. Customers use these tools to analyze nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), small molecules, and proteins to make scientific discoveries, leading to the development of new pharmaceuticals, and to conduct standardized testing. Applied Biosystems is headquartered in Foster City, CA, and reported sales of $1.6 billion during fiscal 2001. The Celera Genomics Group, located in Rockville, MD and South San Francisco, CA, is engaged principally in integrated advanced technologies to discover and develop new therapeutics. Celera intends to leverage its genomic and proteomic technology platforms to identify drug targets and diagnostic marker candidates and to discover novel therapeutics. Its Celera Discovery System™ online platform, to be marketed exclusively through the Knowledge Business of Applied Biosystems, is an integrated source of information based on the human genome and other biological and medical sources. Celera Diagnostics, a joint venture between Applied Biosystems and Celera Genomics, is focused on discovery, development, and commercialization of novel diagnostics tests.
