Routine testing using Millipore’s membrane filtration products will help you stay in compliance with regulations and assure you of accurate, dependable results. Quality solutions for your water testing requirements begin with Millipore. Browse here for products for your specific testing needs.
There are five steps to the membrane filtration method. The MF technique is the standard test for detecting microorganisms and complies with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, Edition 20, 1998.
Millipore offers a variety of products for microbiological analysis of water, including membrane filters, media, incubators, sampling valves and dip testers.
We also have more than 50 years experience using the membrane filtration (or MF) method for testing water. The method comprises of five steps:
Sampling
Sampling is the fundamental step of sanitary water testing. An appropriate, representative sample is critical for accurate results. Millipore offers products for collecting samples from both in-line purified water and in the field
| Application | Product | Description |
| Sampling from tanks and in-line pipes | ESP Valves | Sanitary design prevents bacterial build-up inside the pipe. The valve itself is maintained sanitary between sampling – independently from the line sterilization.
|
| Pocket-size tests for semi-quantitative monitoring | Samplers * | Samplers are ready-to-use, self-contained devices containing dehydrated media and filter. Available with 3 different media:
|
* Not approved for testing in accordance with Standard Methods.
Filtration
Good laboratory technique is essential when accuracy is important, particularly in microbiological laboratory procedures. Care in sample collection and preservation, a clean laboratory or work surface, proper sterilization practices and close temperature control along with written operating procedures, calibrated instruments, operator training and validated methods ensure reliable results. Samples should be filtered immediately for definite, accurate results

| Microfil Filtration System | Presterilized, ready-to-use funnels Cost-effective system with new, patented filtration support
|
| Microfil V Filtration Device | Assembled, pre-sterilized funnel and filter unit Convenient, ready-to-use for testing drinking water
|
| Stainless Steel Manifolds |
|
| EZ-Pak Dispenser and Membranes | By pressing lever, dispenser delivers a sterile membrane and automatically collects protective packaging
|
| S-Pak Membranes | The standard volume to be filtered for drinking water samples is 100 mL. Use 47 mm membrane filters with a 0.45 mm pore size to retain coliform bacteria.
|
| Forceps | Beveled, unserrated tips let you handle the filters without damage. |
Culturing
We certify every batch of our m-Endo coliform medium and m-FC fecal coliform medium for compliance with the standards set forth in the Safe Drinking Water Act. Certificates of quality are issued for every batch. Our media is produced with precise specifications and is thoroughly quality control tested to ensure optimal growth and maximum shelf life.
| Application | Product | Description |
| Potable Water (U.S.) | m-ColiBlue 24 Broth |

| Potable Water (U.S.) | m-Endo Total Coliform Broth | Packaged in glass and plastic ampoules |
| Wastewater | m-FC Broth with rosolic acid | Available in 2 mL plastic ampoules or 110 g dehydrated bottle |
| Petri Dishes | Pre-loaded dishes eliminate the cost and labor of hand-loading pads and minimize contamination

Incubation
Single and Dual-Chamber Incubators provide dependable performance in both the lab and field. They are designed for recovery of indicator organisms – total and fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci – as well as other microorganisms. Use appropriate temperature and recommended time; incubate samples upside down to prevent condensation from forming on the filter. Listed are a few examples of North American recommendations.
| Total Coliform | 35°C ± 0.5, 22-24 hrs. |
| Fecal Coliform | 44.5°C ± 0.2, 24 hrs. |
| Fecal Streptococcus | 35°C ± 0.5, 48 hrs. |
