Surface Monitoring

Industries manufacturing products for human consumption require a high level of hygiene. Their hygiene controls are usually based on strict regulatory requirements enforced by different authorities.

Maintaining control over microbial contamination in a manufacturing process is usually enforced by a strong environmental monitoring program. This program covers 3 main control points that will influence the final quality of the product:

  • Air
  • Personnel
  • Surfaces

Surface monitoring is a major part of the contamination control strategy in industries like Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic or Beverage manufacturing. The regulations concerning these tests are usually well known, e.g., EU GMP Guide, USP (Chapter <1116>), ISO-Norms.

Measuring the contamination of surfaces follows two main principles: Contact Plate and Swabbing. Contact plates can be utilized when surfaces are even and easily accessible. When the surface is not easily accessible or is uneven, testing with swabs is the method of choice.

Millipore can offer you Swabs for surface monitoring. If you are interested to learn about these products, click here.
