Engaging and Motivating Employees
Millipore has a workforce of approximately 6,000 worldwide. Educating employees about how to decrease their environmental impacts at work and at home expands the impact of our efforts beyond the boundaries of our company.
In October 2007, we implemented a program to encourage employees the opportunity to purchase carbon offsets through Sustainable Travel International. Carbon offsets funds are invested in projects to generate renewable energy, such as solar and wind. Employees can use Sustainable Travel International's carbon calculator to estimate their annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Then they can decrease their own carbon footprint by purchasing carbon offsets and the Millipore Foundation will match their payment, up to $100 per year.
Sustainable Travel International funds GHG emission reduction projects worldwide. For example, solar energy projects in Costa Rica and Eritrea, biomass in India, hydo-electric power in Indonesia, wind energy in Madagascar, methane collection in South Africa and renewable energy generation in the United States. Learn more about carbon offsets here and watch this video produced by My Climate that shows the concept of carbon offsets at work in South Africa.
In addition, as participants in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program Change a Light, Change the World campaign, Millipore encourages employees to replace just one incandescent light bulb in their house with a compact fluorescent bulb. Although we just started this program, our employees have already pledged to change more than 1,000 bulbs, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 200 metric tons each year.
