Environmental Applications
In addition to advancing human health, some Millipore products are used specifically for environmental applications. The Environmental Applications section of our web site provides an overview of our offerings related to groundwater sampling, aerosol monitoring, contamination analysis and water testing.
Examples include the following:
- Eastern Analytical Inc., a full-service environmental testing lab based in Concord, New Hampshire, uses Millipore’s Rios™ and Milli-Q® filters exclusively to produce highly pure “type 1” water. The Rios, a reverse osmosis ion exchange, initially cleans water from the drinking water main, which has high pH and high levels of phosphates, chlorine, ammonia and other substances. The lab then uses the Milli-Q with its 0.2 micron carbon filter to further clean the water. Technicians use this water to produce all reagents, standards and quality control compounds used in testing. Millipore works with several other labs that use its products for similar purposes.
- Our Process Monitoring Tools Group creates products that support microbial analysis of fluids. This group caters to the drinking water and wastewater industries, which use sterile filters, microbial media, incubators and filtration devices to assess the suitability of potable water for drinking and analyze effluents in waste water before discharge.
- Our site in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, supports the Harris Center for Environmental Conservation, a local non-profit organization which provides environmental education to students from elementary through high school. Millipore has donated products such as incubators, vacuum pumps, media and a lab quality microscope, which the group uses to teach the students how to culture bacteria to assess water quality in local rivers.

Conant High School students gather chemical data on the Contoocook River as
part of their River Monitoring program. The yearly chemical and biological data
they collect helps inform the Contoocook River Advisory Committee on the
relative health of the Contoocook River.
