Local Efforts: Jaffrey, NH

Recycling of process water in Jaffrey, NH, allows us to reuse 40% of the water drawn from natural resources.

Located approximately 90 minutes northwest of Boston, Massachusetts, our Jaffrey, New Hampshire facility (250,000 square feet) is our worldwide center for Bioprocess manufacturing. It employs over 600 people on three shifts, and manufactures products that are used in scaling up and manufacturing therapeutic compounds worldwide. The operations have grown significantly over the last few years with completion of a state-of-the-art ultra-filtration membrane plant and new warehousing facility.

Water Reduction

At our Jaffrey site, we use reverse osmosis (RO) technology to produce the purified water needed for production and as a principal component in our water recycling and reuse program. In order to produce the high purity water needed, the production RO systems typically "waste" (reject) about 25-30% of the total water volume processed. We invested in another RO system to process this reject stream from the production RO systems, and reclaim an additional 50% of the water for reuse. This results in about 6.3 million gallons (23.85 million liters) of water saved per year. The "waste" or reject stream from this second RO system supplies water needed for all the toilets and urinals in the plant. This saves an additional 4000 gallons per day, or about 1.5 million gallons each year. The total annual amount of water saved with this program presently is over 7.7 million gallons (29.15 million liters) which is enough to fill approximately 12 Olympic swimming pools.

The site is now purchasing a higher output reverse osmosis system that will achieve an even greater recapture rate to match the growth of the business. We anticipate the capital costs will be recovered in less than two years.
