Environmental Health and Safety Metrics
Millipore's EHS Management System captures a wide variety of data electronically from our sites across the world. We utilize several key databases, one of which is a centralized, web-based database that tracks important EHS metrics:
- Environmental and health/safety incidents.
- Root causes of incidents.
- Specific corrective actions and their owners.
Since 2004, all incidents at Millipore plants are weighted according to severity. Every plant is measured on monthly, annual, and 12-month rolling average bases. Plant Managers are held accountable for their plants’ overall EHS performance.
Our corporate EHS Incident rate is reviewed monthly by the Executive VP of Global Supply Chain and his staff, and annually by our Board of Directors Corporate Governance Committee.
Although incident rates have declined, we have more work to do.
Environmental Metrics
Sites enter data on an annual basis, or more frequently in some cases, into a secure, purpose-built, web-based database. We have been tracking data in this database since 2006, when an older version of our metrics system was retired. Currently, we track:

John Burns, Equipment Support Technician, demonstrates use of compressed air monitoring equipment.
- Electricity (KWh)
- Natural gas (therms)
- Oil (gallons)
- Water (gallons)
- Water recycled (gallons)
- Solid waste (pounds)
- Recycled waste (pounds)
- Hazardous waste (pounds)
- Greenhouse gases (metric tons)
Because one of our top global priorities is the reduction of our impact on climate change, electricity use is a key indicator that we track, along with other fossil fuel and process emissions. Learn more about our efforts to reduce our climate impacts and energy consumption.
EHS Scorecard
Plants measure themselves against an EHS Scorecard that they are also held accountable for. They self-assess themselves using an audit checklist that covers fundamental EHS criteria, such as:
