Our Vision, a note from our CEO Martin Madaus, PhD

Millipore has undergone a radical transformation.
Through strategic acquisitions over the last two years, we’ve significantly expanded our Life Science capabilities and the range of products we offer to ensure that we remain on the leading edge of innovation in our industry. As a result, we have increased our revenues from $991 million in 2005 to $1,255 million in 2006, and grown from 4,500 to 6,000 employees.
Our new brand is symbolic of our recent transformation. Central to this new brand is Millipore’s commitment to sustainable development. The concept of sustainability refers to our ability to operate efficiently and productively while minimizing our negative impact on the environment.
No issue illustrates the importance of sustainability better than climate change. The years 2005 and 2006 have already broken records in terms of increases in average temperatures. If left unaddressed, climate change will have a major negative impact on the future of our children and their children.
Striving to be a sustainable company is partly about responsibility – it is simply the right thing to do. Sustainability also aligns with our long-standing core values against which every employee is measured — integrity, innovation, passion and execution — and with our philosophy, Advancing Life Science Together™.
But sustainability — and this is the really exciting part — is fundamentally about opportunity. Decreasing our environmental impact not only benefits the planet, but also our bottom line. Reducing the amount of energy and materials used while creating less waste and emissions saves money, helps to maintain strong relationships with local communities, and increases employee pride in our company. Our ongoing success requires that we address and minimize the impacts we have on the environment, without impacting our products’ performance.
Our customers increasingly care about sustainability, too. They want to know how they can reduce their own ecological footprint. If we can help them with that, we all win.
As a leading company in our industry, we have the opportunity to demonstrate good corporate citizenship on a global scale. This requires creative thinking and bold action beyond regulations. We’re moving carefully to ensure that we don’t over commit to what we can accomplish, but we already have several efforts underway that move us in the right direction.
This year, we produced an inventory of our global greenhouse gas emissions through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program and are setting goals to reduce it. We’re always looking for ways to increase the energy efficiency of our operations and to build and renovate more efficient buildings. We’re also in the midst of upgrading our company auto fleet to include hybrid vehicles.
In the longer term, we seek to radically reduce Millipore’s contributions to climate change and the company’s dependence on oil-based products by becoming carbon neutral and oil independent. These are big tasks and will require significant investment, but we are serious about this change.
As individuals, we can adjust our life styles and make choices that decrease our ecological impact. For example, I have decided to use more efficient compact-fluorescent lighting at home, buy fresh, local foods to cut down on energy used for transportation and processing, and drive a more fuel-efficient automobile.
We’re encouraging Millipore employees to reduce their individual climate impact by offering a matching donation program for employee purchases of carbon offsets. These investments will enhance the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. See our Climate Change page for more details on all of these efforts.
We invite you to learn with us and see how you can reduce your own impacts, as we advance Life Science together.
Sincerely,
Martin Madaus, Ph.D.
