Packaging is a challenging issue for the life sciences industry due to requirements for sterile conditions, protection for fragile contents, and additional certifications and data sheets. All this means extra packaging, which in turn requires extra environmental resources and creates waste disposal challenges.
To address these challenges, we have:
- Reduced the size of some outer packaging
- Reduced the amount of void fill and inserts used in some cartons
- Continued to work with suppliers to add SFI and FSC content packaging materials where possible
- Reduced the amount of over-packing needed for shipping
- Developed reusable packaging for customers and suppliers
- Evaluated the stability, safety, and environmental impacts of recycled content in our packaging
- Evaluated biodegradable and compostable packaging alternatives
