| Ion Channels as Drug Targets Ion channels are well known for regulating electrical activity in excitable cells, and many roles in non-excitable tissues continue to be uncovered. They are important therapeutic targets in a range of indications including arrhythmia, hypertension, local anesthesia, pain, stroke, epilepsy, depression, bipolar disorder, COPD, autoimmune disorders and diabetes. Recently, the emergence of automated electrophysiology systems has revolutionized ion channel drug discovery by enabling significant advances in tractability for compound screening. Though not truly high throughput, these systems have had a major impact on the capacity and speed of information-rich assays that can be used to support focused library screening, medicinal chemistry and safety pharmacology for many types of ion channels.
