The discovery of cancer-specific mutations in PIK3CA, the gene coding for the catalytic subunit p110α of PI3-kinase, has transformed the field of lipid kinases from an area of basic biochemistry into a focus of intense interest for drug development, yet the new opportunities depend largely on the availability of purified, mutant p110α.
